On April 24th, Pilgrim’s varsity and junior varsity boy’s volleyball teams faced off against Tollgate in a very close and intense series of games. Varsity games are scored by winning three out of five sets. The way to win a set is to reach 25 points and have at least two points more than the other team. During this point, Pilgrim had not yet won a volleyball game this season. The first set was really close and went into overtime with Pilgrim at 24-26. Pilgrim then fell slightly behind on the second set, only scoring 20-25, but the team picked it up a bit on the last set, scoring 22-25. Team Captain, Caden Stowik, spoke a bit about the season so far saying, “Yeah we have had a lot of close games. We took one game to five sets instead of getting three O’d. We’re really keeping the score close too!”

The way JV is scored is whoever wins two out of the three sets wins the game. Luckily, the junior varsity team clutched a victory, becoming their third for the season. When speaking about his junior varsity counterparts, Caden Stowik says, “They have put up more wins than us. I’m seeing some great prospects like my buddy Chance.” Ywjpheng Thao also added to the conversation saying the JV athletes are “doing pretty well” and that his own brother, Genew Thao, is another great prospect. Ywjpheng also reflected on the season’s eventual ending. “I’m kind of sad. I like playing with my boys… we’re going to miss Caden and Dylan who are seniors this year.” The volleyball team has worked very hard this year and can only hope for an even better season next year. Caden Stowik and Dylan Alvarez will forever value their time on the team, but have confidence for their teammates next year.
