Do you feel like your identity is accepted here at this school?
If the answer is yes, that’s exactly what the International Club is trying to achieve. Run by Mrs. Corpolongo, this club is trying to promote diversity and understanding amongst the students of Pilgrim—and having a lot of fun doing it!
On September 20th, students from the international club attended Rhode Island’s 46th Annual Heritage Festival, an event where many different ethnicities are sharing worldwide crafts, music, dancing, and culture.
That’s not to say that the club isn’t doing much within school walls. Mrs. Corpolongo is hoping to run a similar event right here at Pilgrim where students of different ethnic groups can share their cultural identity. They often run fundraisers and events to promote diversity.
Additionally, in tandem with the foreign language department, they are organizing an International Food Day. On that day, students can bring in any international food of their choice and there will be a potluck at lunch which, in the words of Mrs. Corpolongo, will be a “feast of international dishes.”
However, more than just having fun events, they have a mission to “showcase the diversity of Pilgrim” and make sure all students feel as if their identity is understood and appreciated. To achieve this, they do things big and small, such as having an international Christmas tree where students could share ornaments that displayed their culture and who they are.
For those thinking of joining, the club meets on Tuesdays in Room 705. They have an Instagram account run by club president, Henry Iech. “Come and check it out,” says Mrs. Corpolongo, “and if you believe in our cause, if you support it and want to help…you’ll love it.”
All in all, if you want to make friends, have fun, and help improve the atmosphere of the school, the International Club might just be the place for you!
