On Thursday, October 15, the Pilgrim Girls Tennis Team held their annual Senior Night to celebrate the Class of 2027 and their time on the team. The event took place at Pilgrim’s home courts at Warwick Vets Memorial Middle School.
Prior to the beginning of the match, a small party was held to celebrate the team’s seniors and commemorate one of the last home matches they will ever play. The festivities included food, lots of pictures, and reminiscing on all the memories the team has shared together. Then, the competition began.
They were set to challenge Exeter-West Greenwich, who were 5th in Division 3. However, our Pilgrim Girls are having an outstanding season with a record of 12-1 and the first place position in the division, and were hoping to keep this winning streak alive when they took on EWG.
After a series of hard-fought games, the girl’s wishes came true and the team walked away with a win of 7-0. In singles, Natalie Schmidt won 6-2 6-2, Kaylie Martell won 6-2 6-1, Scarlette Gagne won 7-5 6-1, and Sophie Henner won 6-2 6-4. As for doubles, Kharmalina Mitchel and Catherine deluca won 7-5 6-2, Karina Koopman and Lia Wasilewski won 6-1 6-3, and finally, Jaelyn Hunter and Julia Louth automatically won their match after EWG forfeited their third doubles.

Once the match had wrapped up, Senior Captain Kaylie Martell spoke about the team’s success this year and her goals for the future. She states, “I think we’ve had an outstanding season so far, truly dominating Division III after recently moving down from Division II. With only one loss on our record, a close 3–4 match, we’ve proven just how strong our team is. I hope we can carry this momentum into the playoffs, continue to perform at a high level, and ultimately bring home the championship for Pilgrim.”
“Since joining the team, the Class of 2027 has never experienced the playoffs, as we have yet to qualify. However, in our senior year, I hope to change that. As one of the team captains, my goal is to lead my teammates with confidence and determination, helping us finish our final season with a victory.”
While the successful season was extremely exciting for the team, the most important part of this night was celebrating the seniors before the Class of 2027 finished their time at Pilgrim. The Girls Tennis team will face Classical in the Division 3 Finals at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 31 at Slater Park in Pawtucket. Let’s go, Pilgrim!
