Pilgrim High School recently hosted another blood drive, organized by the Rhode Island Blood Center and led by Mr. Lalonde, one of Pilgrim’s physical education teachers. Mr. Lalonde first began coordinating these drives back in the 2000s while he was a teacher at Veterans High School. As a donor himself, he volunteered to take over when the previous coordinator retired, calling it a “natural move to continue on”.

Uniting for a Cause

Although the drives are usually held regardless of cause, the purpose of the drive on September 19th had a special meaning. It was in honor of Madison “Madi” Brodeur, one of Pilgrim’s students, who was diagnosed and is currently battling with Nasopharyngeal cancer. Faculty and students came together, donating in Madi’s honor, showing their love and support for her and her family.

When asked how it feels to be a part of something that saves lives, Ms. Casey shares, “It feels amazing, absolutely amazing. It feels really good to know that you’re helping someone who’s suffering.”

Goal Surpassed

The goal for this drive was to have around 35 donors, but Pilgrim went above and beyond. Overall, 61 people signed up, but 15 were deferred due to reasons such as low iron or low blood pressure. By the end of the day, there were 46 successful donors. This is enough blood to help up to 138 people!

More Blood Drives to Come

Anyone 16 or older can donate, and drives are scheduled during the school day so students can sign up and participate any time. Mr. Lalonde describes the process as “simple and quick,” adding, “It may be a little pinch and hurt for a second, but think about the people who are getting it.”

With at least four blood drives a year, Pilgrim ensures many opportunities to donate. Next time you see a sign-up sheet, consider adding your name and becoming a reason someone’s life is saved!
