Every year one of Pilgrim’s science teachers, Dr. Savery, selects ten of her best Biotechnology students to compete in a state-wide science competition known as SkillsUSA. At this competition students partner up in the lab, challenged to navigate an unknown environment while performing the closest they can to a perfect experiment, where they are then judged on their abilities. This past March 21st, Dr. Savery chose six seniors and four juniors to compete at Johnson and Wales University against several other school districts.

Dr. Savery has previously become a state-champion with her students in earlier years such as 2024 and 2022, but how did they do this year? Testing various scientific skills, such as micro-pipetting, gel electrophoresis, and restriction enzymes, along with a written lab report and assessment, these students spent months preparing and working towards perfection, in the lab where the most precise movement matters. Not only relying on knowledge, but on each other.

As the leader of past winners, Dr. Savery explains that the most valuable contribution within competing is collaboration, adaptability, and critical thinking. Two-time competitor Mia Donnell agrees, expressing, “I made sure to work with my partner a lot and work on skills we both needed to work on…it wasn’t just me, it’s a team effort.”

Although Warwick students competed separately with their partners, a win for one group would mean a win for our district, and further recognition for the overlooked science community. The night of April 2nd the winners will be announced, revealing the scientist’s performances, win or lose showcasing their dedication and hard work. Dr. Savery recognizes these heavy efforts claiming, “I think they looked great, they came out a little shaken but I think overall when I spoke to them they seemed like they were doing things the right way so I am super proud of them and I can’t wait to see the results.”

Update:

Pilgrim’s Mimi Johnson and Grace Ferland brought home the gold in Biotechnology for Pilgrim at the Skills USA Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Savery proudly posted to the Pilgrim community, “This is the second year in a row that Mimi is state champion, a rare accomplishment!!”
