On December 7, Apponaug held its annual Winterfest. This is an exciting event meant to encourage the holiday spirit. There was a large parade with many performers and floats to promote the festivities. There were also many buildings open that were giving people the option to participate in Christmas-themed activities.
One of the many buildings opened to the public was the Warwick Center for the Arts. This is an organization that specializes in promoting art for all ages. They provide classes, workshops, and exhibits to adults and children. Students from Pilgrim who are a part of the National Art Honors Society (NAHS) were invited to volunteer at the center during the Winterfest event.
Emma Deus and Armina Ayriyan are two of the volunteers that helped to make this experience possible. They were responsible for setting up the Warwick Center for the Arts and preparing art supplies for the big day. On the day of the Winterfest, Avery Marques, Daneesha Rodriguez, Neil Roberts, and Bubbly Izzo showed up to help run the event. They assisted children with building their own holiday-themed crafts and decorations. Kids were allowed to go around to each station and create projects such as making snowflakes out of popsicle sticks and reindeer necklaces. At the end of the experience, these children could take home their creations and display them around their homes to bring on the holiday spirit.
The goal of Pilgrim’s National Art Honors Society is to bring more art into the community around us. The work done by these students was extremely beneficial to the Warwick Center for the Arts and helped engage children in creative activities. Without these volunteers, opportunities like these crafts might not have been available during the event.
