Pilgrim Unified Volleyball started October off with a tough fought match against Hendricken. Even though it was a loss, the team did not show any signs of giving up and as players routinely shared that, “we’re the best!”

The unified program is a program to give kids with disabilities the opportunity to play competitive sports. When asked how she felt about the unified program Coach Labella responded,  “Oh it’s great! It’s great to get everyone involved.” She mentions that this year especially there are more “shadow players” or partners  that help and stand with the players throughout the game.

During the first set Pilgrim was able to get the first point with a set over on Hendricken. The Patriots got strong defense but lost the first set. During the second set, Pilgrim came back with a point on serve. When Hendi came back up and got the score to 2-4, Pilgrim came in with another serve making it 3-4. However the set was lost with a score of 11-25 due to the Hawks putting pressure on Pilgrim’s openings.

Pilgrim never gave up and were in it to the end, showing strong determination. They lost the third set and the game, but the team laughed it off and shared cookies after too. The unified volleyball team showed how no matter the circumstances there’s always something to be proud of and excited about, win or lose.

The unified program as coach Labella says “is woven into the community here at Pilgrim.”

The unified club meets every Friday during Advisory.
