On Friday, Pilgrim football returned to the field once again. The game took place under the bright lights over the Morry. Prior to the game, the senior cheerleaders and football players walked out across the field with the teacher of their choice. They have an annual teacher appreciation night that proudly thanks the teachers for their hard work and the significance they have brought to that specific senior. They walked out in a line, the teacher of the senior’s choice was wearing the corresponding jersey.
After the ceremony, Pilgrim’s mind was quickly set on the game.
Pilgrim came out strong in the first quarter, with running back Jacob Souillere breaking through Cranston East’s defense to score the first touchdown of the game. Following Jacobs’s impressive run, Pilgrim successfully secured the extra point, making it 7-0 to give them the early lead.
As the game progressed into the second quarter, Pilgrim continued to show their offensive strength. Luka Ruscio, another stand-out player for Pilgrim, found his way into the end zone after an 80-yard run. Unfortunately, they missed the extra point after Ruscio’s touchdown, leaving the score at 13-0 by halftime.
In the third quarter, Cranston East regrouped and managed to break through Pilgrim’s defense, making a much-needed touchdown. However, similar to Pilgrims missing extra points, Cranston East also failed to convert theirs, leaving the score at 13-6.
In the last minutes., both teams pushed hard, with Cranston East pushing to come back. Pilgrim’s defense held strong, in the final minutes, being 10 yards away from the end zone, the MVP of the game, Colin Burke, prevented them from scoring another touchdown,
The game ended with Pilgrim celebrating a well-fought 13-6 win. Their ability to capitalize on early opportunities and their strong defensive efforts in the second half allowed them to score the win.
After Pilgrim’s second win of the season, Coach Blake praised his team’s defense highlighting their strong performance, stating, “Once again, our defense played amazing, causing multiple turnovers, rallying to the football, and tackling really, really well on a very strong runner that Cranston East has.”
Colin Bruke, MPV of the game, was also interviewed and shared his thoughts on the upcoming games. Burke expressed his desire for the offense to improve, saying, “I’m looking forward to scoring more points on offense. Our offense didn’t really get anything at the end of the game as much as we wanted to. So we wanna put more points, and we are onto Burrillville next week.”
After this game, Pilgrim hopes to continue their winning streak against Burrillville on Saturday, 9/28 at noon.
